A RARE COLLABORATION BETWEEN THIS MACHINE KILLS, YAPHET KOTTO, & ENVY

September 28, 2009

In 2000 This Machine Kills and Yaphet Kotto flew to Japan to tour with Envy. It was called the NO SLEEP TIL JACUCHI PANTS TOUR. We played, off the top of my head from Hiroshima, Nagoya, Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo, Sendai. It was the second tour that This Machine Kills did in Japan. This Machine Kills was my old band with Brett Hall, Brian Roettinger and Jeremy Fransen. While we were out there we went in the studio and recorded this 10 minute epic ballad with 5 guitars, 3 basses, 4 vocalists, 2 drummers. Tetsu from Envy wrote the japanese lyrics while i primarily wrote the english lyrics. Takashi Araki recorded the session. The session eventually came out on Tetsu’s label Sonzai Records and finally has been dug up. Good friend Josh Madden twittered this link out and I felt sentimental enough to keep this track alive to post it up here. Let me know what you think, this is hardcore blended between three artists that play different sounding screaming loud music.

DIM MAD ASIA TOUR RECAP – DAY ONE

September 28, 2009

diplo_steve_1jpg

(new dim MAD tee available on dimmak.com – super limited to 20 tees)

this is gonna be a quick recap as im sitting in this United Lounge in Narita Airport waiting for my next flight to Honolulu and i dont have much time  to add all the crazy pictures and videos. ill keep updating til this is done no matter how badly written this turns out…

DAY ONE – BEIJING

diplo already got in a day early and climbed around on the great wall and shoplifted from asian ladies selling panda hats. jacob and i got in day of the show. and for the most part it was the same schedule for the rest of the days fly in a few hours before dinner, eat, go to sound check while jacob sets up our pop up shop, chilll abit then do our 3 hour set… try to sleep. and as boring as this tour recap will be – we didn’t even drink. yup, we are the squareest djs traveling the world but somehow the parties were all bonkers. so going back to BEIJING, day of the show we actually had time to see the sights. went to forbidden city and walked through the golden ball doors and down the corridor and the huge expansive areas where guards stand guard protecting empty buildings (at least i think they are empty) bought a mAssive shrine to MAO (his head is gold on a wooden plaque) pretty sweet. took pics in front of a nice portrait of MAO. walking through forbidden city was a major TOURIST highlight of the tour for me. it was almost as sweet as the trip shitdisco cobrasnake and i took to the monkey den where hundreds of monkeys surround you as you walk up 1000 flights of stairs to a cave in kuala lumpur. anyways, so we saw forbidden city walked across the street to tianmen square where the infamous foto of the guy that stood in front of the tank was shot (if you didn’t know) i spellled tianman wrong too. it was a big square with tons of chinese people taking pics like of other people taking pics. kinda bland besides these lcd panels of helicopter shots of china. last year i came to beijing with cobrasnake, the bloody beetroots, uffie and them jeans .. missed out on all day time activities but saw some pics that cobra took of tianmen square. and he actually caught an IN THE ACT photo of a kid shitting on a piece of newspaper right in the middle of the square like who cares i gotta shit right now vibe. it was amazing. i didnt see any kids shitting anywhere when i came however, diplo came here day before and was minutes away from a headline news scene of a guy that went crazy and started stabbing everyone, stabbed 22 people.. check cnn.com for fact checking. that was it about beijing daytime activity. hopefully i wont be lazy and ill post some pics up soon. fast forward to the show. before we arrive at tango, the club we were playing at i prefaced everyone that china has got a melloooooww nightlife scene. crazy party kids – wont be here… so lets have fun but there wont be any sweaty kids throwing their shirt off and stage diving. ive played in beijing, shanghai and hong kong enough times to know this. we walk in to the club and its a 4 story building with karaoke rooms, live stage concert hall kinda room, and the night club. the club is packed and we head to our dressing room where it looks like the maynad’s kitchen in TRUE BLOOD but with chinese food everywhere. eventually we make our way to the stage and the club is rammed with 40% foreigners and the rest chinese people. the foreigners were all front and center of the show and screaming already. i had no idea beijing was this hype. diplo goes on and kids are chanting MAJOR LAZER… they knew what was up. he played a solid set and i jumped on and rocked the party as well. altogether it was a pretty raging show with more energy than most places in america. GO BEIJING.
